Black Magic White Lies, chapter 4
Title: Black Magic White Lies
Chapter 4 - In Which Xander Discovers the Sitch Is More Screwed-up Than He Thought
Timeline: BtVS, alternate season 5
Genre: drama, mystery, action
Characters, pairing: general, Xander/Faith
Rating: R (for intense situations).
Summary: Xander thinks he has a little secret. He doesn't know that his little secret is a part of a big fat conspiracy.
Disclaimer: They all belong to Joss. He said I could play with'em, so there.
Author's notes: Much thanks to my wonderful betas [info]lusciousxander and [info]deird1 who encourage me, help me with character voices, fix my bad grammar and style. All mistakes are mine. This is my first plotty multi-character fic, so concrit is very welcome.

The story starts here

The road to Stockton is uneventful. Xander changes radio stations every time they play a love ballad. Music brings up too many memories. He can't allow himself the luxury of these memories - of her implacable, sad eyes, her smooth, silky skin, her luscious breasts, her talented hands that know all the right places to touch... He has to have a clear head.

He runs different scenarios in his head again and again. Maybe the pregnancy mellowed her and she will be glad to see him. Maybe she's even more embittered and angry than the last time he saw her and she won't even read his note.

His note. He spent all evening on it. He wasted half a notebook on half-finished drafts. And all he came up with is this:

"Faith,

Please, read this, don't just throw it away. I'm writing as your friend. I want to help you and your baby. I will do anything you need. Just tell me. Could we talk? I have so much to tell you. I love you. I tried not to, but I can't. I can't stop thinking about you. Don't get me wrong - I'm not asking for anything. Just let me help. Any which way I can.

Xander."

The prison looks like a special kind of hell, he decides, as he parks his car and slowly goes to the gates. He braces himself. He's ready for her hostility, mocking, contempt, hate. He's ready for tears, swearing, insults, laments.

But the actual events catch him completely off-guard.

When he says Faith Lehane's name in the visiting room of the prison, he is met with curious looks. A guard asks his name and, after checking his ID, leads him into a small room where he is told to wait. The guard leaves before Xander has time to ask him anything.

The bars on the windows are dirty and depressing, just like the room itself. He stares at the ugly empty chairs. After several interminable minutes, he tries the door. It's locked. Blind panic sweeps him - he desperately fights the urge to pound on the door with both fists. He hears voices in the corridor and hastily plops into the chair.

"Mr. Harris?"

There are two of them - one in civvies, one in a doctor's scrubs. They introduce themselves. The civilian says he's a prison counselor - "...And you are?"

"I'm the father of Ms. Lehane's baby." There, he said it aloud. "Can I see her?"

The counselor and the doctor exchange looks.

"Why are you here?" asks the counselor.

Xander tenses. "Beg pardon?"

"Your pregnant girlfriend was transferred here five months ago. You never visited her. Why now?"

Suddenly, Xander feels uneasy. There is something they're not telling him.

"I didn't know she was pregnant until the day before yesterday," he says curtly. "Can I see her?"

They exchange looks again.

"May I ask how you discovered that your girlfriend was pregnant?" the doctor says.

He has to think quickly. "A friend... actually, a friend of a friend. He saw her when she was transferred here. He noticed - but he wasn't sure about her condition."

The civilian gives him a piercing gaze.

"Did I get it right? Five months ago somebody you know noticed that Lehane could be pregnant. But he didn't tell you until now, right?"

He feels trapped. Are they interrogating him? What the hell is happening? He strains every nerve to look calm. "No. Actually, I haven't seen that man in ages. He told my friend. My friend told me. I came as soon as I could."

"The man who told your friend - what's his name?"

Xander looks at the counselor sharply. "Is this an interrogation?"

"His name is Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, isn't it?"

Xander has a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. Something is horribly wrong. He glances back and forth between their faces trying to figure it out. They look concerned. The counselor frowns at him with barely hidden dislike; the doctor pinches the bridge of his nose and looks away.

"What the..." Xander whispers hoarsely. "Is she okay? Is she... is she alive?"

The next ten seconds are the longest ten seconds in his life. Xander feels shivers running down his spine. Finally the civilian nods to the doctor almost imperceptibly.

"She's alive," doctor says. "She's safe."

Relief floods him. "Thank you."

The doctor looks at the counselor questioningly. The latter shrugs.

"Last night there was an attempt on Lehane's life," doctor says.

Xander draws a sharp breath. He isn't sure he heard correctly.

The counselor eyes him narrowly. "Do you have any idea who would want her dead?"

Xander shakes his head. He does have an idea, of course. Council goons.

"Had your girlfriend been a member of some illegal religious sect?"

He is at a loss. "What do you mean - a sect?"

"The people who tried to kill her - they wore weird clothes, not unlike monks' habits," the doctor says. "Rings a bell?"

Monks. Giles and Willow are investigating the murder of a monk. "She never talked about monks," he says. At least he's not lying.

"They were not monks," the doctor says patiently. "Actually I'm not sure what they were. Weird little creatures with black eyes and..."

The counselor clears his throat loudly. The doctor shuts up mid-sentence. "Never mind," he murmurs.

Xander feels sick. "How..." His voice sounds hollow. "How could they get to her?"

"Good question. How could they," the counselor makes air-quotes around "they", "get to her. Why would they attempt to kill her now, when she's about to give birth. Why she is afraid to see anyone. Your buddy Wyndam-Pryce came several times - he was quite insistent, but she refused to see him."

"She isn't afraid." Xander stares through him. "She doesn't want his pity. Her stupid pride won't let her take help from anybody. In her book sympathy's an insult."

"You owe me a beer," the doctor says to the counselor. The latter frowns.

"How long have you known her?" he asks.

"Two years. Listen, I swear I don't know anything about any sect, just let me talk to her, please."

The doctor gives him a sympathetic look. "I'm afraid it's not possible. Lehane is in intensive care and she hasn't regained conscience yet."

Xander leaps to his feet. "Intensive care? Did she?.. Is the baby okay?" He realizes that he's shouting. "Sorry," he murmurs. "Could you tell me what happened here?"

The doctor sighs. "I'll tell him," he says to the counselor. He doesn't ask his permission - he just tells him. The counselor shrugs again, and the doctor tells that recently Faith was transferred to the hospital ward because she's due to give birth; that last night a nurse heard suspicious noises, called guards and they discovered two dead bodies and Faith, unconscious, bleeding, wounded in the chest. Thankfully the baby wasn't hurt. Right now Faith is in a stable condition but she is sedated.

"Whoever trained Lehane to fight, trained her well," the counselor adds sourly. "These guys had knives. I wish I could see how a heavily pregnant woman, who was apparently asleep when they attacked her, managed to deal with them."

"Maternal instinct," the doctor says without much conviction.

"Maternal my ass," the counselor grumbles.

"Your ass is quite an argument."

"Uh-huh. You know, your ability to go for the easiest explanation never ceases to amaze me."

"Saves a lot of trouble."

"Sure. Maternal instinct is stronger than big sharp knives. This guy," the counselor points at Xander, "finds out Lehane is pregnant and the next day she's attacked - but of course it's just a coincidence."

Xander is aghast. They think he tried to kill her?

"I didn't say you were planning to kill Lehane, young man," the counselor says off his glare. "But I don't believe in coincidences."

"Do you want to talk to her about the child's custody?" the doctor asks Xander. He pointedly ignores the counselor's conspiracy theories.

Custody? A wave of heat rushes through Xander's body. The idea is as unexpected as it is wonderful. He will have something he and Faith did together. He'll bring up their baby and when Faith will get out of the prison, who knows? She may want to join them...

"I - I can apply for a custody? Really?"

The doctor nods. "If she agrees, of course. You're not married, so legally you don't have any rights unless she officially names you the father. Come tomorrow, I'll take you to her."

"It's a violation of the rules," the counselor says softly.

"Report me if it makes you feel better."

They exchange vague grins. Apparently, it's an inside joke Xander doesn't get.

On the way back to Sunnydale he finds a radio station that broadcasts rock-music. He listens to guitar riffs and it takes him a lot of effort to not exceed the speed limit. Somebody tried to kill her. Somebody. Somebody doesn't know it yet, but they're in big trouble.

But he has to plan thoroughly, and act cautiously.

I love the workplace banter between the doctor and counselor. Very realistic. Xander is being very sweet and making all the right "responsibility" noises, but methinks the guy hasn't got a clue, quite yet.

Thank you!

I have to confess that I totally can't write OCs. I tinkered about this chapter forever and I almost dropped the story. But finally I found the way to trick myself into an AU vision: I made a awful manip and I have managed to write the doctor and counselor as...

Photobucket

I'm glad they worked for you! :)

Weird little creatures with black eyes and...

Mork and Friends? But if they want the key, with the key being Faith's child, why would they kill her before giving birth?

And I'm still slightly confused on the timeline. When exactly would Xander have had a chance to sleep with her in the last nine months, if this is end of Season 4/start of Season 5?

There may be some illusion going on on Xander's part. Or some more creative history/memory editing by the monks. Hmmm.

Thank you for reading and for the questions. I love questions!

So far, we only know the counselor's interpretation of what happened.

I try Monks try to keep as close to canon as possible. In canon, Faith woke up from coma February 25, 2000. Right now, it's November.

Or some more creative history/memory editing by the monks.

Oh, there will be more of that later. :)

But Xander did only sleep with Faith during Season 3? Or did the monks add an episode with Buffy-in-Faith?

Apparently, Xander remembers sleeping with Faith the day she woke up from the coma (in ch. 2) It's a graphic, vivid memory - but was it real?

Apparently, I made the timeframe of their encounter too obscure. When I was writing the chapter 2, I decided that the mention of coma is enough to indicate that it happens soon after Faith has woken up; I should have added another reference to the time the scene supposedly takes place.

I think the events of Cruciamentum changed Xander's and Willow's perception of the Council. If the Watchers could use a crazy vampire to test a loyal Slayer, why couldn't they invite demons to punish the disloyal one?

That's how I explain Xander's reaction to the news.

Ooooh this is getting better and better!

I think you've got Xander down perfectly from his concern to his somewhat naive thoughts of a family with Faith, the child, the white picket fence.

I am really looking forward to finding out who attacked Faith and why.

Incidentally, is Lehane her actual last name? I don't remember them mentioning it in the show, so I've always avoided giving her a last name in fanfics but maybe I missed it.

According to Wikipedia, "known only as "Faith" during the television series; she was not given a surname until 2005, seven years after her first appearance. Joss Whedon was approached by Eden Studios to create surnames for Faith and Kendra to use in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer role-playing game, and chose "Lehane" for Faith, because he wanted something "southie".

The lame-ass manip was a desperate act of a desperate writer :) I remembered an old advice for scripwriters: keep in front of you the pics of the actors you consider perfect for the roles. I found James in scrubs in Millenium, put him next to David/Angel - and the characters immediately started talking to me. :)

Very interesting development. Methinks the counselor and the doctor might be helpful allies in the future. I do love how your writing makes me go back and ponder. :)

Xander changes radio station

This isn't really concrit, but I noticed you're missing an "S" on the end here --> "radio stations".

I really enjoyed this part:

"She isn't afraid." Xander stares through him. "She doesn't want his pity. Her stupid pride won't let her take help from anybody. In her book sympathy's an insult."

"You owe me a beer," the doctor says to the counselor. The latter frowns.

For the subtlety of perception each character displays of Faith. First, I think the counselor got it right. Faith is afraid, that's why she hides behind her pride. A bit sad to see that Xander doesn't get that, that Faith's tough facade is a front to protect herself from letting anyone get close enough to really hurt her. Second, sad to see that doctor!Spike isn't that perceptive but then again, he doesn't understand Faith the way counselor!Angel does and Spike never really saw beneath Faith's surface the way Angel did.

<----Icon is for the doctor because I believe the counselor does not in fact owe him a beer. ;)

Interesting. You know, initially it was just a plot point: I needed a tight situation, so Wesley asked Giles for help after all his own attempts to find out anything about Faith proved to be futile. His request started the chain of events, some of which we have witnessed, and some of which has already happened but will be revealed later (although there are clues to them within the text).

But, when I started thinking about justifying Faith's behavior, I couldn't come up with a single explanation. Was she afraid to show her vulnerability to Wesley, who, in her eyes, was still the Council man? Sure. Did she abhor the prospect of his pity? Sure.
So, in the end, both the doctor and the counselor are right - but Xander wins the doctor a can of beer, because he also sees Faith as the ultimate tough girl. He's still to learn a lot about her vulnerabilities...

so Wesley asked Giles for help after all his own attempts

I'm curious as to where Angel fits in here. Because right around that time was when Angel was the one visiting Faith regularly after her voluntary incarceration. If Faith got pregnant in April of 2000, then Angel would have visited Faith right around September 26, 2000 when Angel visits Faith at the end of 2x01 Judgment. So this would be one week before the monks' spell in Real Me on October 3, 2000. So in this altered 'verse, did Angel visit Faith and now have memories of hearing a second child's heartbeat inside her (a la Offspring with Darla)? What brought Faith to Wes' attention and not Angel's? Or does Angel enter the picture later on?

So this would be one week before the monks' spell in Real Me on October 3, 2000.

Monks did the spell somewhere in August: in No Place Like Home (24 October 2000) there is a title card that the spell had been made 2 months ago. In this AU the spell had been made somewhere in summer. So only season 5 is AU. Season 4 is 100% canonical.

But the characters don't remember season 4 the way it really happened. Don't forget that in canon they also remember season 4 differently, with the insertion of Dawn.

So in this altered 'verse, did Angel visit Faith and now have memories of hearing a second child's heartbeat inside her (a la Offspring with Darla)?

No. In this story Xander basically plays Angel's role - at least in the flashback. I even pondered upon naming Chapter 2 "Five by Five, Bedroom Version". So having both Angel and Xander in this story would have been excessive.

I suspect I have confused you because I mentioned Angel in the first chapter. A lesson to me: to plan the story more carefully.

What brought Faith to Wes' attention and not Angel's?

I think Wesley felt guilty for letting her down and he wanted to help her. Meanwhile Angel went dark, Wesley felt useless and frustrated because of Faith's refusal to see him, so he asked Giles to help.

Ah okay, gotcha.

So the premise is that Sanctuary happened different due to the altered memories? So Angel hasn't been visiting Faith because he doesn't remember being instrumental in her redemption?

The events of Sanctuary happened, but since summer 2000 nobody remembers them. Their memories have been altered and they remember a different reality. Is this reality valid? Worth fighting for?

In hindsight I realise that it's a Dollhouse fic with Buffyverse characters...

I enjoyed the counselor and the doctor interrogating Xander and his growing unease at just what the heck is going on. Glory's minions coming after Faith is an unpleasant surprise, and I'm left wondering just how much of Xander's memories about Faith have been doctored to make him the key's "father." Did he ever really sleep with post-coma Faith? I bet not, but I guess we'll see.

Xander cast as the key's protector is a wonderful twist on canon.

Oooh, this is getting really interesting and complex. There's no way to tell what's real, what's Xander possibly reaching wrong conclusions, and what's the work of the monks, which makes it all really fun in a "Usual Suspects" kind of way.

One tiny thing. There are no "illegal" religions or cults in the US. Even if you declared yourself a follower of Charles Manson or some other murderer, you couldn't be arrested for your religious beliefs, only if you committed an illegal act, conspired to do so, or advocated it in such strong terms it could be considered almost a conspiracy. For instance, polygamist sects can't be shut down; the authorities have to go after individuals for crimes like child abuse (forcing underage girls into marriages).

Thank you - I will keep that in mind.

When I wrote that chapter, I tried to imagine how prison authorities could react to Glory's minions. I decided that any normal person would see them as humans who were artificially mutilated. And they wore strange clothes similar to monk's habits. And they tried to kill a pregnant girl. Prison officials could come to a logical conclusion, that Faith had been a member of an illegal sect that practised mutilation of its members and punished those who tried to escape to avoid the ritual of mutilation.

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]missmurchison
2009-09-07 04:12 am UTC (link)
Gotcha. Still, it would be the behavior (mutilating unwilling people) and not the belief that they should mutilate people that would be illegal. And if adults wanted to be mutilated, I don't think the government could do anything unless they could show the sect members were insane. (Yes, I realize that when it comes to religion, my country is insane.)

The reactions of the doctors were very reasonable, it was just the one word "illegal" I was being a nitpicky pest about.
